Kowdi Kutumba

Kowdi is an art, of North Karnataka (Gulbarga, Raichur, Yadgiri etc.), with which many bits and pieces of different colour prints and types of cloth are joined with concentric/parallel lines of running stitch to create a thick double sided bigger piece of cloth.
Women have been doing this for a long time in order to reuse cloth and not waste it as much as possible. They make quilts of all sizes and it takes them about a month to make one quilt and hence they have never thought of this as a marketable product.
KOWDI is an attempt at commercializing this art by designing marketable products and teaching women in these slums to make smaller artefacts so that they see more value in their skill and are able to earn an added income which may improve their conditions.
